San Gimignano's skyline of 14 surviving towers (of an original 72) made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Tuscany's most iconic sights. The compact walled town rewards slow wandering: the Piazza della Cisterna, the Collegiate church with its frescoed interior, the saffron gelato (a local speciality), and sweeping views of the Val d'Elsa countryside.
